Intu Broadmarsh Redevelopment

MPN Broadmarsh centre is a concrete framed shopping mall constructed in the early 1970s currently in the advanced design stages of partial demolition, rebuild and refurbishment works. The site consists of two levels of retail units forming its main body and a retail/office annex along Drury Walk to the north of the site.

The refurbishment works above live trading retail units, include the design and construction of a new multiplex cinema, a new large leisure complex and a new arcade linking a new entrance at Colin Street to Listergate Square. It will also involve the refurbishment of Listergate Square and new units along a new Drury walk.

MPN were commissioned by Intu to deliver the full scope of Structural and Civil design services for the refurbishment and re-build works, collaborating closely with Benoy Architects, Project Managers Gardiner & Theobald, and the rest of the design team.

The interface details between the new steel frame and the existing concrete structure pose some challenges. The new cinema structure has been designed as a steel frame with metal deck slab. The roof is proposed to be lightweight standing seam roof on structural roof deck spanning between main steel rafters. The use of metal deck slab and lightweight roof is to ensure no load increases for the existing concrete columns and foundations.

Now in construction, MPN have been retained by Intu to monitor and advise during the construction phase of the project, which is being procured through main Contractor Sir Robert McAlpine.
